WiP - Old Hammer Slaanesh champion

I have wanted to paint this Slaanesh champion for years, but never actually settling on a paint scheme I was happy with. Considering it is over 26 years old not only has the model faired well, but it's also damn fun to paint.

It's nice to revisit a model which has free expression in the sculpt, by Jes Goodwin, with the gender ambiguous overtones. We're unlikely to see a sculpt like this by GW now.

Well I'm painting it up as a Christmas gift this year so it will be sad to see it go, but hopefully it'll be joining a Mordheim chaos warband.

I also realised I haven't uploaded any photos of my nurgle daemon prince so here's a WiP shot

I'm pleased the detailing on the silk cloak turned out better than expected, after risking the paintjob to try out a bit of freehand.

Starting with a dark brown sketch out of what I wanted, before working up to an almost NMM gold filigree.

Picking the areas which required a highlight wasn't easy and I ended up making the decision to almost abandon source light for the sake of the design. I may return to specific areas and thin layer darker blue to maintain the shadow.

For a miniature which is probably 15 years old this one has stood the test. Aside from the clean up this model needed to be ready for painting it is a great canva, it was the perfect excuse for a bit of freehand.

This miniature has been painted for a project I've started: Warhammer Quest on a budget. I'll stick a post up about this shortly.

When I heard about the Barbarian dude, a miniature sculpted by Raining Frogs Garage, I was disappointed that I missed the limited run by around a year. I signed up for the mailing list anyway, and had an email a month or two later advertising a redux version. Both editions of this model have won sculpting awards and just looking at the detail you can see why!

I've had quite a few projects on the burner and I wanted to improve my painting skills before even looking at thIs guy. He's only blue tacked together at the moment.

I give you.. The Barbarian Dude Redux

Kingdom Death - Flower Witch

The Flower Witch arrived today...

Having bought a number of the kingdom death models, purly because of the exquisite sculpting. It's also good to know it is also supporting the horrifying brain child of Adam Poots.  If you haven't heard of him check out Kingdom Death.

Here are some photos of the unboxing of one of his latest creations, the Flower Witch. Sculpted in a similar fashion to the early work on the Flower Knight, this model remains true to the world he has envisioned.

In the customary style of KD the personal touch of the box is second to non and the level of detail in the sculpt is stunning. I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking.

Thought it was time to rebase the nurgle warriors, my modelling has improved a bit since they were first based.

He is the unit's new bases and movement tray. Still a handful of bases to complete and some painting to do do. The most useful bits I found were dryad bits, so much to work with.

The hellcannon is going to be a maggoth lord monster kit with rider removed. Seemed more appropriate to have nurglings instead of chaos dwarves.

It surprised me how easy the basing was to do. I had images of wasting hours on the tedious job of chopping branches and then carefully positioning them on each individual base.

Turns out it was actually pretty fun to do. I want to give the impression of a jolly rabble, so I'm including a variety of blessed warriors. Simply because I see Nurgle as a fun loving guy who only wages war for the opportunity to meet new people without sufficient disease resistance to prevent everyone becoming very close to him.

I can't use skull crushers in an all nurgle army for fluffy reasons, so I'll need another hammer unit which can somewhat replace them. Ten chaos knights are that unit.

Used plenty of bits from the blightkings box set, GW supplied a load of spare pieces with the kit and they can in handy. Also liquid greenstuff is handy for adding a rusty texture to meta,  in fact I'd say it's the only use for liquid greenstuff :)

I guess the model could be used as a hero level character too, but for now he'll just be a challenge monkey.

Ghurk and Otto Glott have a new base. I changed the Otto model, as the other one wasn't to my taste. This one more accurately represents the S6 too.

Fantasy - The End Times Void?

I thought it was time to discuss what appears to be GW clearing house in preparation for 9th edition and where that leaves the current incarnation of WHFB.

There are dozens of Fantasy blogs and forums we have all enjoyed, many times we have lept to each one in anticipation of rumours and new realeases, not to mention following Army creation and painting progress, but these have remained eerily silent in recent times. making it difficult to remain positive about everthing happening to 8th. It's obvious hobbyists are excited, cautious and concerned about changes to a hobby, many have known for decades.

First of all the End Times was a huge undertaking and I got the impression the ET saga, with dozens of scenarios, new characters, units and story really had the potential to be a lasting legacy for gamers. It offered such depth to the game, that myself and thousands of others purchased the books and models. However I feel GW didn't give us enough time to really appreciate it. The information contained was vast, far outweighing a single game edition release. Lets face it the meeting of the warhammer world and real life is often a slow burn and when coupled with the so much info and gorgeous new models to buy and add to the plastic mountain it took us all a while to settle down and start to formulate how it was going to effect our gaming. When we finished the books, or heard the spoilers this likely contributed to the unrest, as many people dropped cash on new releases believing it was the beginning of something, but this was in direct contradiction to the storyline.

Then came the rumours of 9th! And wgat felt like a breath of life, quickly evaporating any excitment and left us with an enormous void. Suggesting to people the organisation were going to write off units and even armies.

There are many suggestions as why this has happened, with supporting evidence that GW are making moves to protect their IP as well as reinventing the game to appeal to the more popular gaming style of 40K and it's little brother 30K (the latter incredibly generating more income in 2014 than fantasy). With that in mind it is clear why GW considered it time to reimagine fantasy from it's current incarnation.

So that leaves us all wondering in the dark. But there are suggestions of two marketing dates available in the GW release calendar, one in Early May and one Mid June where a new Fantasy release could be set for general release. This has stalled many people with their gaming and modelling In Fantasy, but given the discontent with the hollow left after the End Times I would take this as an encouraging sign there are still thousands of people keen to see a recreation of the fantasy world.

I guess its mere moments away so I will remain careful optimistic. Bearing in mind that if 9th edition fails to hit your hobby spot you still have thousands of miniatures in the current edition, likely thousands unpainted in your own collection ;) which can be painted up and gamed with. Do you remember when GW cancelled specialist games? That wasn't the death knoll of Necromunda, Inquisitor, blood bowl or Gorkamorka, those games flurished in communities worldwide. If the rules and models of a new Fantasy fail people will revert to 8th edition and with ebay there will be a representation of each army available for purchase long into the future.

The spirit of the hobby remains exactly the same.

Russ :)

The Warhammer Quest... Quest

I remember Warhammer quest fondly from childhood, it was one of the games our circle of friends enjoyed above most. The RPG elements of the game really spoke to our intrepid bunch of 13yr old fledgling dungeon master / explorers.

Having recently been in awe of the work done by Kingdom Death and it has brought home my desire to rekindle an old love for dungeon adventure. I bought the Quest iPhone game, in hopes it would satiate me, but it left me wanting, it wasn't simply the levelling up of characters, battling trolls & orcs in search of elusive treasure... It was the narrative and comradeship, which just isn't present in electronic games for me.

Our single copy of quest had been sadly destroyed due to improper storage, if only as a teenager I could have understood the need for airtight sealed boxes!! So I checked eBay... The game alone costing £100+ without any other miniature for monsters or adventurers.

- THE QUEST -

To collect and paint the models needed for a faithful recreation of the original game.

- Challenge requirements -

These may prove impossible, but it seems reasonable to try and stick to these premises:

• £150 budget - beg, borrow or steal.
• Original models are not required, but a faithful replacement is. No 'dwarf miner' counts as 'troll slayer' shenanigans will be tolerated.

• Original cards, tokens, rules and board pieces are required. Currently this does not apply to expansions.
• I am not currently looking for a full resin mock up dungeon. This recreation is designed to be a reasonable budget and although it would be superb to have those funds I'm not currently looking for this level of depth.

• All favours, donations and sneaky purchases will be documented. Omission is considered sneaky ball-baggery and not in keeping with the spirit of things.

• A running total will be kept and some creativity with trading on eBay / forums may be necessary. However I will not be using means inaccessible to anyone else.

• Models I own (which are few for quest) can submitted to the cause as I am under the impression most other gamers will likely have access to some dual purpose models in their collection. Be they minotaurs, orcs, elves or goblins.

• 8 adventurers - are a minimum for this project. I want the set to be playable more than once or twice though, it's designed for long term use. They will also need their rules, cards, counters and equipment.

On the workbench - Basing a monster like Glottkin

I guess I'm kind of cheating with a theme like the garden of nurgle as you'd expect I could glue any backyard detritus to a base and call it finished, but I did put a little effort in. Especially with the tree, as the citadel forest straight out of the box is unconvincing.

One neat trick I found was using PVA glue and superglue. They react with each other and form a tough wrinkled skin surface. It's nice and organic, making covering large areas much easier than using tones of greenstuff.

And then there is the invaluable instant mould. Heat it up, press onto a surface then run under cool water and save yourself hours of sculpting. Great stuff.

A review has already been done on Chest of colors so I won't cover any more here.

Whilst waiting for the end times to... End, I've been spending some time expanding my Warhammer quest collection. I figured it might be fun to have a fully completed game. This is especially so we have a game ready for when my son is old enough to play.

Plus I get to run the game out with mates before all that :)

Here are the level 1 beasties I've been working on for the past month or so.
